365 Resolutions & Counting: #2. Write to the Prime Minister

From: E.
To: The Right Honourable Stephen Joseph Harper

 Dear Mr. Harper,

It seems unfair that elected leaders should yearly address their best wishes to their constituents while so very few of the latter ever take the time to respond in kind. I have resolved to personally make an effort to reverse this trend.

I therefore wish you, Laureen, Benjamin, Rachel and Stanley a very happy New Year. May 2012 bring you nothing but good health and fortune, and the kind of memorable moments which elevate the soul to new heights of gratitude, compassion, and understanding.

While I have your attention, I would like to take this opportunity to ask you a few questions. To be sure, there is a wealth of data about you (and elected officials in general) and yet I find I am missing some of the most important information. I haven’t the slightest clue, for example, as to what you usually dream about, or whether or not you ever feel compelled to write a poem.

What do you sing in the shower, if anything? Do you think Ecclesiastes is depressing? (I don’t.)

Of course, I am in no position to demand an answer to the above questions, especially seeing how they have little bearing on governance. Still, I feel like knowing more about the women and men who affect our lives so profoundly, and I hope you – or one of your aides – can help me in this regard.

Again, I wish you and your family nothing but the best for 2012, and hope this message finds you well.

Warmest regards,
E.

P.S.: Please make no further cuts to the Arts. I appreciate that balancing the economy is a very complex juggling act, but I have some hard-working friends who certainly deserve better than this.

I have already e-mailed it to him. I'll write him an actual letter in a couple months (that's another resolution).

I encourage you to do the same.
